Ake, paralyzed after an accident, is waiting for the new male nurse’s
arrival. Lonely and embittered, he lives surrounded by employees in
a formerly gorgeous residence alongside his authoritarian father he
hates. His inner world enlightens through hypnotycal pictures of the
cosmos as his daily life is sapped by his overall impotence. When the
nurse arrives, Ake starts bullying him before fi nding a way out he no
longer expected thanks to his new companion…
In this first feature film, Anocha Suwichakornpong paints the dreams
and bodies through a language that swings between spirituality and
raw reality. Playing on the dissonances in the music and editing,
the Tai director confront the “punk” atmosphere of the original
soundtrack to the silence of the insistent inertia of the characters.
Beyond the history of a physically and socially impotent man, the
fi lmmaker underlines the tragedy of a paralysed Thai society.
Showcased at Paris Project 2009 and awarded during the latest
Rotterdam Film Festival, Mundane History explores, through its
lyrical escapes, the futility of the human condition in the biological,
psychological, social but also political and cosmical universes. |
