In the 1990s, Laurence announces to his girlfriend Fred that he wants to become a woman. Against all odds, and perhaps in spite of themselves, they confront the prejudices of those around them, resist the influence of their families, and brave the fears of the society that they disturb. For ten years, they try to survive this transition, and embark on an epic adventure whose price is their perdition.
