A young boy arrives illegally in Hong Kong after fleeing Vietnam by boat with other refugees. He finds his cousin, who arrived earlier, and does what he can to fit in. He soon realises that life in the British colony has its disadvantages, and it does not bring him the relief and security that he had expected. Part of a trilogy about Vietnam by Ann Hui (with the films The Story of Woo Viet and Boat People), The Boy from Vietnam is one of the director's most outstanding made-for-TV films, in which we find some of her recurrent themes: exile and identity in a Hong Kong that is merely a place of passage.
