Violeta Parra – singer, poet, and painter – is a veritable icon of Chilean culture. Violeta recounts the destiny of an extraordinary woman: her successes and her failures; her childhood with an alcoholic father; her debuts with the guitar; her brutal, determined approach to motherhood and to the world; her aesthetic and political commitments, up to her tragic end. To the rhythm of Parra's poignant songs that were mined in the bowels of the Chilean earth, this freely rendered portrait of a tormented and passionate artist is conveyed with magnetic grace by Francisca Gavilan
