The Mafia has just murdered the Dawns who left their son, Little Phil, in the care of their neighbour Gloria Swenson just before they die. The father bequeathed him an incriminating register that endangers the two survivors and lead them to a relentlessly escape. Cassavetes is coming back to the East Coast with a film to the glory of Gena Rowlands, the director's muse. Melodrama and documentary crudeness are combined in this shifting urban geography both realistic and oneiric. A vital film about the impossibility to find peace.
