Chased by a police officer, the Tramp takes refuge inside a circus, stumbling into the ring. Acclaimed by the audience, he becomes the star of the show and is hired as a clown. There he falls madly in love with Merna, the beautiful equestrienne. After The Gold Rush, The Circus propelled the iconic Tramp into a “universe of sawdust, laughter, and tears”. First disparaged by Chaplin, who refused to allow it to be projected for nearly 40 years because of the chaotic conditions in which it was made, it is now considered to be a monument of cinema. A perfect balance between slapstick and drama, a work to be enjoyed without restraint!
