At the heart of a scandal in Vienna, hot-blooded Gustav Klimt is the spotlight of the 1900 Paris World's Fair. In a Méliès film, he marvels at the dancer Lea de Castro, who becomes his muse and lover in his world of sensual, tumultuous passions. Far from a biopic, Klimt is envisioned by Ruiz, the eternal fantasiser, as a waltz whose intensity rises to a state of frenzy. Orgies of colour, distortion of space, lighting changes, and camera movements lead this film of luxurious plastic beauty in a reverie rooted in the psyche of an artist, played by a very inspired John Malkovich.
