Emily wants to start all over and leave behind her a rock star ex-boyfriend, drugs, and decadence. Now she has only one obsession: getting her life together in order to get her son back from his grandparents, who are raising him. This intense melodrama of startling emotion, the chronicle of her conquest, manages to capture with a paradoxical softness the world of rock with its destructive “adventures.” Sobriety incarnated, fluidity of movement, acuity of details – everything is purified in order to make way for Maggie Cheung’s intense performance. She turns Clean into one of the highpoints of Assayas's art.
