Joy, dix-huit ans, est portée disparue. Helen, jeune apprentie comédienne qui s’apprête à quitter son foyer d’accueil, est sollicitée pour incarner l’adolescente dans une reconstitution organisée par la police : il s’agit de retracer les derniers faits et gestes de Joy avant sa disparition. Cette dernière avait tout : une famille aimante, un petit ami et un avenir prometteur. Contrairement à Helen, orpheline, qui a passé toute sa vie dans des institutions, sans jamais pouvoir se confier à personne… Helen trace le parcours d’une jeune fille en quête d’identité, à travers lequel se dessinent les contours d’une solitude et d’un malaise plus larges, auxquels sont livrés les adolescents. Christine Molloy et Joe Lawlor associent beauté formelle et désespoir moderne dans une œuvre étrange, dérangeante par instants, entourée par un halo de mystère. Les comédiens, la jeune Annie Townsend en tête, sont au diapason du minimalisme narratif. Ils traversent avec délicatesse cette histoire d’absence, de fantômes, et finalement de renaissance qui se double, par un jeu de correspondances, d’une réflexion sur le cinéma lui-même et la puissance de l’identification à un personnage à la fois par l’acteur et le spectateur.

Joy is eighteen and has gone missing. Helen, a young actress who is about to leave her foster home, is approached to play the teenager in a reconstruction organized by the police in order to recount Joy’s last actions before she disappeared. Joy had everything she needed : a loving family, a boyfriend and a promising future, as opposed to Helen who is an orphan and who spent all her life in different institutions without ever being able to confide to anyone. Helen follows the life of a young girl in search of an identity. The outlines of strong loneliness and feelings of ill-being, which teenagers tend to suffer from, appear on her path. Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor combine formal beauty with modern despair in a strange and sometimes disturbing film which is surrounded with an aura of mystery. The actors – led by Annie Townsend, a young woman – are in tune when it comes to narrative minimalism. They handle in a subtle way this story of absence, ghosts and finally rebirth which, through different analogies, is coupled with a reflection on cinema and the power of identification with a character by the actor and also by the audience.
