Diplomacy

La secrétaire d’État américaine est sur le point de rencontrer le ministre iranien des Affaires étrangères. Chacun est accompagné d’un interprète : Michaël pour le côté américain et Azar, une jeune femme lumineuse, pour la partie iranienne. Face à la tension croissante, ils improvisent une stratégie tacite commune et se mettent à travestir les propos des dignitaires… Avec brio et énergie, au rythme croissant des regards qui se croisent, Jon Goldman tisse avec sa caméra le chassé-croisé d’une négociation, rendant palpable au fil des échanges une tension contenue toujours sur le point d’éclater. Partant d’un sujet d’actualité brûlant, le film évoque l’incompréhension latente entre l’Iran et les États-Unis et ouvre un questionnement plus large sur la possibilité d’un dialogue. Comment arriver à s’entendre ? Avec une ironie lucide, le film suggère que parfois, il suffirait de déplacer quelques mots : les relations diplomatiques sont parfois tenues par le fil subtil de la rhétorique…

The American Secretary of State is about to meet the Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs. They both have an interpreter : Michael for the United States and Azar, a radiant young woman, for Iran. Faced with increasing tension, they improvise a tacit strategy and change the dignitaries’ words. Jon Goldman does a brilliant and energetic description of exchanges during negotiation, making us feel the tension which is about to explode. Based on a topical subject, the film brings up the latent lack of understanding between Iran and the United States and calls a general question on a possible dialogue between the two countries. Through a lucid sense of irony, the film suggests that, sometimes, moving a few words could change things, as diplomatic relations often hang by the subtle thread of rhetoric.
