Remembrance of things past: Yasmin Ahmad presents Mukhsin
Saturday, July 7th 2007
Yasmin Ahmad, a Malay film director and one of the festival's guests of honour, presented her competing film Mukhsin. This event was an opportunity for the audience to discover a sensitive and moving film and to meet with a remarkably open and charming filmmaker.
“Mukhsin is based on events from my childhood. Of course, the young Orked is me! Since the film was very successful in Malaysia, I received several letters, one of them from a young girl telling me that Mukhsin was her father. I did not have the courage to respond, probably because I wanted to keep my memories intact. The story took place over less than two weeks, and the film was shot in 12 days. Very important things can occur in just an instant! Maybe that is why most of my films are contained within short lapses of time.”
A Family Story
“My father is the one who wrote the music, particularly the song about rain. Orked's parents, a loving and eccentric couple, are very much inspired by my parents, who appear at the end of the film, sitting at the piano, in the scene shown after the credits. As for Orked, she is actually the younger sister of the actress who plays her mother's part in the movie. Amani Sharifah, whom you see with me, is the third sister, the one who plays the principal role in the other films in the trilogy: Chinese Eyes and Anxiety. I only work with non-professional actors, since I have a very instinctive way of making films."
